Community Engagement
- Each school year, we provide 700 book bags to students from our communities.
- Every fall we distribute 500 coats, along with hats, gloves, and scarves, to residents.
- On a regular basis, we deliver free groceries and dry goods to families and seniors.
- Through our partnerships with other Austin nonprofits, residents receive rental assistance, help in avoiding evictions, COVID-19 testing and vaccinations, and access to safe spaces for relaxation and recreation.
- During the summer months, our Thursday evening “Community+Culture+Connection” gatherings at La Follette Park are filled with food, dance, sports, fellowship, and fun.
Mentoring
- Our commitment to mentoring youth ages 10-24 reflects our belief in the power of positive role models to counter loneliness, isolation, and misbehavior.
- Our Rites of Passage Enrichment Program, designed for children ages 12-17, provides six weeks of instruction on topics ranging from financial literacy and conflict resolution to healthy eating and horticulture. During the pandemic, our field trips to businesses and nonprofit organizations became “virtual” visits.
- Our sessions on vision casting helps young people create mental images of futures that are positive, peaceful, and powerful.
Food Distribution
Our Austin community is a food desert in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food; many of our neighbors are food insecure. To address this basic need, we deliver free groceries each month to more than 200 families and seniors.
- We’re grateful to Trader Joe’s for their generous and regular donations of food.
- We partner with Beyond Hunger to provide seniors with food that meets their specific nutritional needs.
Violence Prevention
Disinvestment, segregation, inequality, poverty, and the pandemic contribute to violence in our beloved community. Our approach to countering this is multi-fold:
- We regularly collaborate with organizations like Austin Coming Together, ALSO Chicago, BUILD, Chicago CRED, Institute for Nonviolence Chicago, the Chicago Police Department, and Chicago Public Schools to develop and implement strategies to deter violence block-by-block.
- Our street outreach program keeps us connected to our residents and provides opportunities for early intervention.
- Facilitated discussions and peace circles are two of the practices we use to assist residents to peacefully avoid and resolve conflicts.
